In May of 2001, the Reynolda elders held an historic spiritual vision retreat and agreed on 14 principles to ensure that Reynolda goes forward as a church established and led by Biblical purposes. What follows is a brief explanation of each of the principles.

Principle #1:
We agree to be a purpose-led church, built upon and instructed by God's eternal purposes (Proverbs 19:21), not tradition, buildings, programs, finances, staff, or anything else. We will center our church around the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) purposes of Evangelism, Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, and Ministry (Acts 2:42-47). We will sensitively, but diligently, eliminate those things that do not further the purposes of the church.

Principle #2:
We agree to be resolute that the message of Jesus Christ will never change, but methods will always be open to change.
Further Explanation

Principle #3:
We agree to always be Biblical in our ministries and strategies, and, with God's leading, to do whatever is necessary in order to expand the Kingdom of God. This means we will hold no thing as 'untouchable.' We will have no 'sacred cows,' but will seek God's will in all matters.
Further Explanation

Principle #4:
We agree to communicate our purposes clearly and regularly so that our people will grow into unity.
Further Explanation

Principle #5:
We agree to build a church in which every member is a minister. Therefore, we will equip people for ministry, help them discover their unique God-given combination of Spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 12); Heart (Matthew 12:34); Abilities (I Corinthians 12:5); Personality (I Corinthians 2:11); and Experiences (Romans 8:28), or S.H.A.P.E., and be released in significant ministries.
Further Explanation

Principle #6:
We agree to structure our church for growth, not for control, so that people and ministries can be initiated, nurtured, and multiplied from the bottom up - not the top down. We will minimize the frustrations, red tape, and obstacles that keep people and ministries from flourishing quickly.
Further Explanation

Principle #7:
We agree to permit people and ministries to experiment with new ideas and programs that are consistent with our purposes and, if they fail, free them from shame and guilt as we encourage them toward other creative initiatives.
Further Explanation

Principle #8:
We agree to do whatever is necessary to build health in all five of the eternal purposes of the church so that the whole church body will be healthy and not diseased. We believe that all healthy things grow, so our church will grow as we become more and more healthy. We will concentrate on removing the barriers to growth in our church by focusing on our church health.
Further Explanation

Principle #9:
We agree to staff according to our purposes.
Further Explanation

Principle #10:
We agree to be sensitive to, but not driven by, seekers (pre-Christians or people unfamiliar with Christian worship and fellowship). We will earnestly desire the presence of the Holy Spirit and His gifts, never compromising our message or making our worship become shallow.
Further Explanation

Principle #11:
We agree to develop ministries to reach five groups of people:

  • The Community - occasional attenders and prospective members
  • The Crowd - those who attend Reynolda regularly, but are not members
  • The Congregation - those who have become Reynolda members
  • The Committed - those maturing through discipleship and service
  • The Core - lay ministers

We will seek to move people from the Community through the other groups toward the Core. We will develop measurable goals by which we can monitor our progress. This means we will love people enough to meet them where they are, and love them too much to leave them where they are.
Further Explanation

Principle #12:
We agree to seek to better understand those we are called to reach, acknowledging that we cannot reach everybody, but knowing that the more clearly we define our target, the more likely we are to hit it.
Further Explanation

Principle # 13:
To make sure that pastors aren't expected to do all the ministry. The Bible says that Pastors (like Evangelists, Prophets, Teachers, and Apostles listed in Ephesians 4) are primarily equippers of Christians so they can minister in Jesus' name.
Further Explanation

Principle #14:
To never compete with other Christians, churches, or organizations, but to complete one another so that we can, together as one team, lay claim to our city and beyond for Christ.
